The World Leadership Corps is the primary focus of the World Education Institute, one of the ten "spokes" in The James Martin 21st Century School at Oxford University. The World Education Institute will act as a link between the research agenda of the other institutes in the School and their potential application in different parts of the world. The James Martin 21st Century School will study the major challenges facing humanity in the 21st century and work toward solutions that will ensure a sustainable future. The 21st Century School will comprise a "Hub" and changeable "Spokes." The Hub will consist of the Director of the School, a small administrative staff, and a number of James Martin Fellows. The School will support some ten Fellows a year from within and without the University through the James Martin Fellowship Scheme. This will enable them to take time to work on an issue associated with the future, with the commitment that one of their outputs will be a paper in the School's publication series. In this way, it is hoped to build up a network of "future thinkers" in the University as well as a set of relevant publications. The Spokes are Research Institutes, each undertaking leading-edge research in its own subject area. The James Martin Institute for Science and Civilization, which was launched in March 2004, will play a key role in the School. It will continue to conduct research addressing the big issues of science, technology, and environment, but it will also take the lead in pulling the work of all the constituent Research Institutes together. It will therefore provide a number of critical activities, including scanning for new and significant problems as they arise, integration and synthesis of the work of the other Institutes, and scenario-building.
