What is the World Leadership Corps?

The World Leadership Corps is a multinational 501(c)3 organization dedicated to global service and to the preparation of future leaders. The WLC recruits young people with exceptional promise for leadership from across the world to participate in a two-year service/learning graduate program. In the first year, WLC participants serve as volunteers in international assignments that address significant global challenges. In the second year, the volunteers participate in a rigorous academic program focusing on international relations, 21st century challenges, and leadership studies.

What types of services and resources does the World Leadership Corps provide?

The heart of the World Leadership Corps is the volunteer program. WLC volunteers provide a wide variety of services in collaboration with host country leaders. In some cases, they work at the grassroots level, while in others, they work with national offices and governmental ministries.

How can I become a World Leadership Corps volunteer?

An announcement concerning available positions in the program for 2007-08 will be issued by the WLC office early in the new year.  Check the WLC web site regularly for more information. Volunteers will serve outside of their home countries. WEC volunteers will typically possess:

  • Self-reliance and openness to new challenges
  • Strong leadership aptitude
  • Proficiency in English, both oral and written
  • Good foundation in computer/Internet skills
  • Commitment to cross-cultural understanding
  • Effective public-speaking skills
  • Deep interest in service and helping others
  • A college or university degree
  • Good health and physically fitness

Volunteers are selected without regard to political or religious orientation. The WLC strives for a rich diversity in racial, ethnic, and national backgrounds, and seeks a general balance in the number of male and female volunteers.

Where are World Leadership Corps volunteers placed?

To date, WLC volunteers have been placed in fourteen countries: Argentina,
China, Dominican Republic, Ghana, India, Jordan, Lebanon, Nigeria, Pakistan,
Sweden, Tanzania, Uganda, United Kingdom, and the United States. In the
years ahead, many more countries will be added to the list of placement sites.

How are World Leadership Corps volunteers supported?

The WLC covers all of the expenses for the volunteer’s participation in the program, including travel, board, room, insurance, and the costs of the orientation and debriefing programs at Oxford. This policy enables promising individuals to participate in the WLC program without regard to financial means.

Who supports the World Leadership Corps?

The World Leadership Corps is supported through volunteerism and donations of cash and services from individuals, corporations, and foundations. Its founder, Dr. James Martin, provided the upfront capital.

Are there ways I can help other than volunteering?

Yes. The World Leadership Corps relies on both individual and corporate contributions. You can support a volunteer in the country placement of your choice. For a tax-deductible contribution, please send checks to the World Leadership Corps, 14 The Stream Edge, Fisher Row, Oxford OX1 1HT, United Kingdom

How can I get World Leadership Corps volunteers in my organization?

The WLC continues to explore the possibility of adding new organizations to its current set of partners. Please contact the World Leadership Corps office for further information.

Who benefits from the efforts of the World Leadership Corps?

The WLC advances the programs of its partner organizations throughout the world. Our volunteers have made significant contributions in the fields of education, communications, public health, economic development, and environmental conservation. Beyond the important contributions that the volunteers make in their host countries, they serve as ambassadors for the “transition generation,” demonstrating through their service and their full engagement in cross-cultural experience, what it means to be a committed citizen of the planet.
